Houston Community College Northeast business administration students gathered at the Northline campus to listen to a panel of business professionals as part of their course in business administration. The panel was comprised of former students of Dr. Rudy Soliz, faculty chair of the business administration program at the College. Panelists shared their professional journeys and offered advice to students on how they can advance in the business world.
?Stay in school. Don?t give up. It will pay off,? says panelist Andrea Paredones who attended HCC Northeast as a university transfer student. She was originally interested in pursuing a career in the medical field; however, she became interested in business through her involvement in various HCC Northeast student organizations. Paredones continued to achieve at the College and was awarded a scholarship to the University of St. Thomas. In December, she will complete both a bachelors and a master?s degree in accounting from the university and will work as an audit associate for KPMG, a major international accounting firm.
Panelist Marlen Trujillo shared with students the importance of volunteering and building relationships. ?I landed my job through volunteering,? says Trujillo. Her initial volunteering opportunity as a Hispanic representative for a local community health center led to an opportunity to work with the organization as CFO. She is now leading the organization as CEO at a local community health center. Trujillo leads a team of doctors, nurses, administrators and other health care professionals who provide medical services to the uninsured and underinsured. She also stressed the importance of a professional appearance and demeanor when interviewing for a job.
Panelist Irma Suarez also began her college journey taking courses in the community college and transferring to Our Lady of the Lake University to complete a bachelor?s degree. She now serves as treasury manager at Nabors Industries, an offshore drilling company, where she is responsible for managing a team of three people and tracking funds for the company. She informed students that there were management opportunities in business for those who obtain a bachelor?s degree and encouraged students to take advantage of company education benefit programs for financing graduate education.
Students asked a variety of questions ranging from the transition from community college to a four year university to employment opportunities in business. Dr. Soliz summed up the panel discussion by stating that college is, ?an investment and you?re going to get a return on that investment.?
