Adapting fish defenses to block human infections: Antimicrobial peptide of fish gills inspire clean surfaces

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? An undergraduate research team analyzes peptides from fish gills to engineer antimicrobial surfaces for food preparation and medical devices.

Living in an environment teaming with bacteria and fungi, fish have evolved powerful defenses against waterborne pathogens, including antimicrobial peptides located in their gills. Undergraduate researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) are studying the biology and the mechanics of one of those peptides with the hope they can use that knowledge to create engineered surfaces that kill bacteria responsible for foodborne illnesses and hospital-acquired infections.

The research team, led by Terri Camesano, professor of chemical engineering, reports its latest findings in the paper "Creating Antibacterial Surfaces with the Peptide Chrysophsin-1," published online in October by the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.

"Fish have a wonderful solution for blocking bacterial and fungal infections," Camesano said. "In this study, we are working to better understand the biochemical mechanics of that process."

As fish filter water through their gills to extract oxygen, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), including Chrysosphin-1, trap and kill pathogens before they can invade the fish's bloodstream. Scientists in many laboratories around the world are actively exploring the potential use of these molecules to prevent human infections. In the current study, the WPI team attached AMPs to silicon and gold surfaces using two different approaches and measured the bound peptides' ability to kill the bacterial pathogen E. coli.

In the first method, the AMPs were absorbed directly onto gold and silicon crystals, forming a single layer of molecules with the AMPs lying flat on the surface. In the second method, the tips of the AMPs were attached to the surfaces with a glue-like substance so that the peptides rose vertically, like blades of grass extending up from the ground. Surfaces with both AMP configurations were cultured with E. coli cells. The results showed that when the AMPs were lying flat they killed 34 percent of the bacteria in the culture, but when they were standing up vertically they killed 82 percent.

"The hypothesis is that when peptides are attached vertically to the surfaces, they are better able to move and bend so they take on a shape that is more effective in binding to and disrupting the E.coli cells," Camesano said.

In addition to gathering data about the antibacterial efficacy of the attached AMPs, the WPI research team developed a technique for monitoring, in real time, the attachment of AMPs to surfaces. Using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), the team measured the quantity of AMPs that successfully attached to the surfaces in the horizontal and vertical orientations and the density of the AMP layers, along with other properties.

"This was a powerful process, to be able to essentially watch the binding process as it happened," Camesano said. "It is a technique that we will continue to apply in further studies."

Camesano said gold and silicon surfaces were selected for the current study because their chemical properties are well-suited for AMP binding. In ongoing work, Camesano's laboratory will continue to characterize the mechanics of AMP binding for optimal antimicrobial activity and test other materials, including titanium, stainless steel, and plastics, that would have greater utility in food preparation and healthcare.

"What is also notable about this study is that it is the work of undergraduates," Camesano said. "They've done excellent work here that will inform future graduate studies in our lab."

The WPI undergraduates who co-authored the AMP paper are Ivan Ivanov '12 (chemical engineering), Alec Morrison '12 (biochemistry), and Jesse Cobb '12 (chemical engineering). Co-author Catherine Fahey, a student at George Washington University, worked on the study during at a summer project at WPI. Their work was sponsored in large part by a grant from the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program.

No health insurance exchange in Arizona | TribLIVE

By The Associated Press

PHOENIX ? Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has decided against establishing a state-run health insurance exchange to implement a key part of President Obama?s health care law.

Brewer?s decision, which was announced on Wednesday, means the federal government will set up an online marketplace for the state, offering subsidized private health coverage. The governor reiterated her unwavering opposition to the health care overhaul and said there were too many costs and questions associated with a state-run exchange.

?The federal government would maintain oversight and control over virtually every aspect of our exchange, limiting our ability to meet the unique needs of Arizonans and the Arizona insurance market,? she said in a statement.

Brewer joins other Republican governors in such states as Texas and Maine who have balked at setting up state-run exchanges, although others in Nevada and New Mexico have opted to proceed. She sent a federal official a one-page letter conveying her decision.

Her announcement preceded a Dec. 14 deadline for states to declare whether they would run their own exchanges.

A decision to establish an exchange would have been subject to approval by the Republican-led state Legislature. Though the Nov. 6 election results reduced the size of Republicans? majorities in the state House and Senate, a Brewer push for a state-run exchange would have faced a fight from GOP lawmakers who oppose the law.

An alliance of hospitals, insurance companies and business groups wanted Arizona to have a state-run exchange, arguing that it would increase coverage while giving the state flexibility in designing a program to its liking.

Conservative advocacy groups such as the Goldwater Institute stood in opposition. They said Arizona should not help implement a law that could foist expenses on the state and raise insurance prices for residents.

Senate President-designate Andy Biggs said he appreciated Brewer?s thoughtful deliberation.

?Any exchange run by Arizona would still include an inappropriate imposition by the federal government on our state,? the GOP lawmaker said.

The hungry caterpillar: Beware your enemy's enemy's enemy

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

When herbivores such as caterpillars feed, plants may "call for help" by emitting volatiles, which can indirectly help defend the plants. The volatiles recruit parasitoids that infect, consume and kill the herbivores, to the benefit of the plant. However, such induced plant odours can also be detected by other organisms. A new study published November 27 in the open access journal PLOS Biology shows how secondary parasitoids ('hyperparasitoids') can take advantage of these plant signals to identify parasitoid-infected caterpillars, and duly infect the primary parasitoid, to the detriment of the original plant.

Plant volatiles have long been considered to mediate this mutualistic relationship between plants and herbivores' natural enemies such as parasitoids. When a caterpillar feeds, the parasitoids are able to use the emitted volatiles to locate the otherwise inconspicuous caterpillar, releasing the plant from its attacker. This principle has made its way into sustainable agriculture by using natural enemies such as parasitoids to control herbivorous pests on agricultural crops. However, the largest group of enemies of parasitoids, hyperparasitoids, have so far been left out of studies in this area. This is because very little is known about the cues that hyperparasitoids use to locate their parasitoid hosts.

The new study, by a team of Dutch researchers led by Erik Poelman, shows that hyperparasitoids exploit the different plant odours that are released when a plant is fed upon by a parasitoid-infected caterpillar.

"In controlled laboratory assays as well as under field conditions, hyperparasitoids were offered plant odours coming from two types of plant: ones damaged by healthy caterpillars, and ones damaged by parasitoid-infected caterpillars. We found that they preferentially detected odours of plants damaged by infected caterpillars," explained Dr Poelman. "We were excited by these results as they indicate that hyperparasitoids rely on a network of interactions among plant, herbivore and parasitoids to locate their host".

To show how this complex network of interactions can reliably provide hyperparasitoids with information on the presence of their parasitoid host, the researchers collected saliva of the caterpillars, as they noticed the colour of saliva in healthy, non-host caterpillars was different to that of caterpillars hosting a parasitoid. Factors in caterpillar saliva play an important role in provoking the release of odours from plants, and a change in saliva composition may then alter the cocktail of odours emitted by the plant.

Indeed, Dr Poelman's team found that plant odours induced by the saliva of parasitized caterpillars was more attractive to hyperparasitoids than plant odours induced by the saliva of healthy caterpillars. Consequently, plant odours may actually reduce the benefit of attracting parasitoids to a plant.

"Our results demonstrate that the effects of herbivore-induced plant volatiles should be placed in a community-wide perspective that includes species at the fourth trophic level, to improve our understanding of the ecological functions of volatile release by plants," said Dr Poelman. In addition to the ecological aspects of their work, the authors also stress that their findings are important for developing Integrated Pest Management strategies, in which crops are manipulated to control insect pests by using parasitoids.

Although parasitoids are effective biological control agents, this study suggests that using plant odours to optimize biological control of pests may have side effects that could actually reduce the benefit of pest control, said Dr Poelman.

(AP) ? Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh was issued a traffic citation by a police officer who said Suh was driving fast and passing cars from the right lane of a suburban Detroit roadway.

The Lathrup Village officer gave Suh the ticket on Nov. 15 for driving without due care and caution, but Police Chief William Armstrong told The Associated Press on Tuesday he was not sure the citation would hold up.

The chief was awaiting a call back from the city attorney to discuss the case, which he said was "in limbo."

"From my bird's eye view, taking a quick glance at it, I'd say the charge doesn't fit," Armstrong said after watching video footage of Suh's driving that day. "Just looking at the tape, Mr. Suh was traveling faster than the cars around him, but I don't think it was to the extent of driving without due care and caution."

Messages seeking comment were left for representatives of Suh and the Lions. Word of the traffic stop was reported Monday by Detroit-area TV station WJBK.

Armstrong's comments came a day after the NFL announced it wouldn't suspend Suh for a low blow he delivered to Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub on Thanksgiving. Suh was on his chest after being taken down by an offensive lineman and extended his left foot to hit Schaub below the belt.

Suh, 25, was suspended for two games a year ago after he was ejected for stomping on the right arm of Green Bay offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith, also during a game on Thanksgiving. He has been fined in previous seasons for roughing up quarterbacks.

Suh, whom the Lions selected with the second overall pick out of Nebraska in 2010, has been involved in several traffic incidents over the past year.

He was ticketed for speeding, improperly signaling and not carrying proof of insurance during a March stop in his hometown of Portland, Ore. Police said he was driving a BMW 91 mph in a 55 mph zone.

In December 2011, Suh lost control of a car and crashed into a drinking fountain and tree in Portland. A woman has filed a civil lawsuit seeking $1 million from Suh in the crash.

He also was involved in a traffic accident last month in Dearborn. Police in the Detroit suburb said the accident was minor and fault could not be determined. When Suh played at Nebraska he pleaded guilty to negligent driving and paid a $60 fine after crashing into three parked cars.

Piano from "Casablanca" could sell for $1 million at NY auction

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The piano from the Oscar-winning film "Casablanca" could fetch more than $1 million when it is sold at auction in New York next month on the 70th anniversary of the premiere of the classic movie, Sotheby's said on Tuesday.

The 58-key piano, on which actor and singer Dooley Wilson performed "As Time Goes By," has a pre-sale estimate of $800,000 to $1.2 million for the December 14 auction.

Wilson sang the song while playing the role of Sam in the 1942 film as Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, the star-crossed lovers Rick and Isla, leaned on the piano in a flashback to their time in Paris.

"How can anything say 'I love you' better than the piano from Casablanca?" David Redden, vice chairman and director of the special projects department at Sotheby's, said in a statement announcing the sale.

The film, set in Morocco during World War Two, won three Academy Awards including best picture, best writing and best director for Michael Curtiz.

In 1988 when Sotheby's sold the piano to a Japanese collector it fetched $154,000, the highest price ever paid for a movie prop. Since then, interest in film props has grown, Sotheby's said.

Marilyn Monroe's white "subway dress" from the 1955 movie "The Seven Year Itch," sold for $4.6 million in Los Angeles last year, setting what Sotheby's says is a record price for an item of movie memorabilia.

Snowmobile Helmets aid.Following is an report by the employees of the Canadian publication SmartRisk and highlights the dangers connected with snowmobilinga sport that is well-liked not only in Canada, but also in the U.S.

Snowmobiling remains popular for Canadians searching for a fun recreational activity, or a versatile mode of winter transportation. But it also continues to top the list of winter?s most lethal sports. The identical is true in the U.S.

According to a research released in 2003 by the Canadian Institute for Health Info, 16% of extreme sports and recreational injuries in Canada in 2000/2001 involved snowmobiles. That ranks second only to cycling (18%).

Most of these injured on snowmobiles had been males in their early 30s. And of the 92 men and women admitted to hospital with snowmobile injuries, completely one quarter had drunk alcohol or taken drugs just before heading out into the snow. Also, many were not wearing snowmobile helmets.

The risk of severe injury can be considerably decreased by not consuming alcohol prior to snowmobiling, or prior to participating in any winter sports, says Dr. Robert Conn, President and CEO of SMARTRISK. People need to understand that by riding a snowmobile with out a helmet or following they have been drinking, they are taking an enormous risk which can have tragic consequences.

Snowmobile aid is readily readily available in Canada and the U.S. at sports centers and on-line. Use your browser to find online sources or snowmobile helmets a click of your mouse could make the distinction amongst obtaining exciting and obtaining no life at all.

Examine snowmobile parts. The operating condition of your snowmobile is of utmost significance. There are now on-line web sites exactly where you can acquire snowmobile components to maintain your machine in tip leading condition.

A malfunctioning part can not only ruin your snowmobile, but it can result in a serious and at times fatal accident. It is crucial to note that any sport or recreation that involves complicated machinery (such as a snowmobile or a motorcycle) needs continual vigilance to keep that machine in great and risk-free running order.

Tablet Display Deliveries Finally Top Notebook computers in October

Posted on Nov 27, 2012 in Technology

It has been a sluggish build during the last many years, but the very first time ever, NPD is confirming that tablet shows are shipping in greater amounts than individuals destined for notebook computers. This doesn?t mean mobile computing are dead by stretch from the imagination, however it does provide light a fascinating trend that?s only prone to accelerate.

Tablet deliveries the coming year might start to exceed traditional notebook computers, but PC hardware is on the considerably longer upgrade cycle than pills. Most customers think little of casting away a 2 years old tablet, while notebook computers typically hold their value for considerably longer. This might partly explain the phenomenon, but here?s what DisplaySearch thinks.

Inventory buildup in laptops: The notebook PC logistics has some slow-moving inventory?and panel deliveries rejected by almost 4 million models from September to October.

Change to Home windows 8: Notebook PC panel purchasers bought less shows because they ready for new Home windows 8 designs.

Ex-Republicans claim Fla. GOP suppressed Democratic vote

Former Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer has been claiming for months that state party members engineered a new law to suppress voter turnout, falsely touting voter fraud concerns to advance their mission.?Now, other former Republicans and consultants are backing Greer up, The Palm Beach Post reports.

Greer, who is under indictment and accused of funneling campaign funds from the Republican Party,?has been claiming that state Republicans supported a law (HB 1355)?which, in part, curtailed early voting?simply as a means to stymie the Democratic vote.

Staff and consultants "never came in to see me and tell me we had a (voter) fraud issue," Greer told the newspaper. "It's all a marketing ploy."

Former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist, GOP consultant Wayne Bertsch and one unnamed consultant now tell the newspaper that state Republicans and consultants were actively seeking ways to suppress Democratic turnout following the 2008 election.

"I know that the cutting out of the Sunday before Election Day was one of their targets only because that's a big day when the black churches organize themselves," the anonymous longtime GOP consultant told the newspaper.

State officials continue to discredit Greer as a disgruntled former Republican. Greer, in a deposition filed against the party this summer, accused leaders of working to suppress black turnout and made other damning claims.

Crist is also regarded as an enemy of the GOP following his party switch, his decision to back President Barack Obama for re-election this year, and his subsequent attacks on his former party. This past summer, Crist lambasted the Florida GOP for backing new laws that applied more restrictive voter ID requirements.

Republicans claim that Greer was not privy to the alleged meetings, that the discussions that he claimed took place never happened, and that the GOP did not seek to suppress turnout?a potentially illegal act.

HBT: Upton expected to sign with new team this week

Most highly-coveted free agents will wait until the Winter Meetings (held in early December) to begin seriously considering their options. But a few pieces of the offseason puzzle typically fall into place a little early. And this year will apparently be no different.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times writes in his Sunday column that outfielder B.J. Upton is ?looking to make a decision this week? on the multiple offers he?s been presented. The Phillies and Braves have both been?aggressive in their pursuits of Upton, and the Nationals, Rangers and Giants have also been loosely linked.

Upton hit just .246 with a .298 OBP in 633 plate appearances this past season for the Rays, but he slugged 28 home runs and stole 31 bases. And that kind of power and speed will always attract great interest.

The 28-year-old from Norfolk, Virginia seems likely to land a five-year deal worth close to $75 million.

Developing a competitive strategy is essential in today?s dynamic search and social web and an effective approach starts by understanding both the broader?Search Landscape and internal Website SEO Readiness.

The approach to competitive search and social media research can vary widely by situation because no business is the same. It?s essentially always going to involve some kind of information capture, assessment and comparison.

A new business entering a competitive market with companies that have mature Internet marketing programs may need to uncover key weaknesses in their competitor?s marketing efforts in order to compete ?David and Goliath? style.? In a situation with companies that have very similar levels of Internet marketing resources and effort, competitive research may uncover weaknesses or unrealized opportunities that can create advantage.

In all cases, an understanding of the competitive search and social media landscape will help content marketers differentiate to better attract and engage with customers.

For example, one entrepreneur in the self-help area of memory and IQ improvement wanted an online marketing program that would help achieve top visibility on Google for the word ?brain.? With a new website and nearly 700 million competing search results for the search term, a first glance evaluation indicated the outcome to be unlikely with any reasonable budget and time frame.

Further research into the search landscape to identify competitors did not reveal the list of online puzzle and learning websites the entrepreneur considered ?competition?, but a mix of Wikipedia, University (Harvard), industry publication and resource websites with large numbers of web pages and a long history of search relevance for the topic.

In the search and social media marketing world, the competition isn?t always who you think.? What companies need to understand is that online competition isn?t just businesses competing for market share in the business world, but information and content published from a variety of sources that compete for search engine and social media users? attention.

In the case of the ?brain? customer, thoughtful analysis of the search and social media landscape revealed popular forums and social networking groups focused on topics related to what the target website visitor would find useful. A more diverse, yet relevant keyword mix proved to be more attainable and more importantly, a better reflection of the interests amongst the target community.

A larger group of keyword targets promoted through the optimization of content and social media channels resulted in the entrepreneur?s website reaching over 300,000 unique visitors per month and a decision to change the business model to advertising over product sales because of the volume of traffic. Had the entrepreneur focused only on ?brain? without conducting competitive and marketplace research, they might still be selling just a few learning games per month instead of a thriving website supported by an active community and strong search engine traffic.

Of course, the research that goes into developing an aggressive search and online marketing strategy goes beyond these basics. There are 5 audits we use for developing a more effective approach to dominating the search and social web including: topic/keywords audit, technical SEO audit, on/off site content audit, social media audit and a linking audit. More on those in my next post.

Small Business Saturday Celebrated In Old City ? CBS Philly

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - An effort to support local business is taking place today throughout the nation.

Things kicked off with Mimosas and Muffins at ?More than Old? along North 3rd near Arch Street in Old City to celebrate Small Business Saturday.

Beth Gibson runs the shop which offers a wide variety of gifts mostly made in the USA.

?Small businesses are really important first of all to the economy. If you don?t have small businesses, mom and pop shops, out here when everything gets to be big box you?re not going to have the local economy in play. Everything is going to be imported,? says Gibson.

Shoppers were getting discounts on purchases over $100.

Three years ago, American Express created Small Business Saturday, it says, to help small businesses struggling during the recession.

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Rutgers officially isn't swapping the Big East for the Big Ten for another two years.

The 21st-ranked Scarlet Knights sure looked ready to check out early, though, in a lifeless 27-6 loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Though Rutgers (9-2, 5-1 Big East) still managed to clinch a share of its first conference title after No. 19 Louisville was stunned at home by Connecticut, the Scarlet Knights head into a showdown with the Cardinals next Thursday reeling.

"It (stinks) to lose, but we still have something to play for," Rutgers quarterback Gary Nova said.

Even if it was the Panthers (5-6, 2-4) who performed like the team with everything on the line.

Pitt's defense swarmed the Scarlet Knights all afternoon. Nova completed just 18 of 37 passes for 157 yards with a touchdown and an interception and left briefly in first half after getting slammed to the ground on his right (throwing) shoulder.

"Their defensive linemen are really good," Nova said. "They put a lot of pressure on me, and we really didn't execute well enough in protection on their pass rush to make a difference."

The Scarlet Knights came in the Big East's biggest surprise, rising to the cusp of the school's first Bowl Championship Series berth despite losing program architect Greg Schiano to the NFL last winter.

First-year coach Kyle Flood stressed his team would not be distracted by an eventful week in which the program announced it was heading to the Big Ten in 2014, though the Scarlet Knights appeared to have their minds on other things while falling into an early 21-0 deficit.

"I didn't hear any of the talk about anything (other than the game)," Flood said. "To me, we had a focused football team coming in here, but we just didn't execute on the football field."

There were no such issues for the Panthers, who continued their maddening inconsistency while keeping their hopes for a fifth straight bowl appearance alive.

Tino Sunseri passed for 227 yards and two touchdowns in his last home game and fellow senior Ray Graham ran for 113 yards and a score as the Panthers beat a ranked opponent for the second time this season thanks to some words of inspiration from the 18 players taking their final bow at Heinz Field.

"We just told (the underclassmen) to leave it out on the field," said Graham, who moved into third on the school's all-time rushing list. "If you're not ready to play, stay inside this locker room. That's one of those attitudes that we have."

The Panthers have alternated two-game losing streaks and two-game winning streaks all fall, leading first-year coach Paul Chryst to joke he hoped the pattern would continue over the final two weeks, allowing the Panthers to play beyond Dec. 1.

It shouldn't be an issue if Pitt can take the intensity it showed during an emotional Senior Day to South Florida next week.

Chryst began the afternoon hugging each of the seniors during pregame introductions, a sign how of hard he's worked to restore a sense of trust between the players and the program after Pitt went through four coaches in a span of 14 months, culminating with Chryst's hiring in January.

The seniors believe Pitt is heading in the right direction, and then went out and showed it by having little trouble with the Scarlet Knights in the final game between the two teams for the foreseeable future with Pitt heading to the ACC next fall.

Pitt outgained Rutgers 365-207, won the field position battle and controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage after finding its footing in the second quarter.

"We put it together today," wide receiver Mike Shanahan said. "I don't think we've played 60 minutes like that all season."

Certainly not on defense.

The Scarlet Knights had the ball eight times in the first half, and punted eight times. Nova never got comfortable in the blustery conditions and Pitt smothered whichever Rutgers back happened to carry the ball.

"If you watched Pitt over the course of the year, you saw that they were capable of playing really good on offense and defense," Rutgers safety Duron Harmon said. "They beat up on Virginia Tech and should have beat Notre Dame, so we knew it wasn't going to be easy coming in here."

It wasn't.

Sunseri hit Shanahan for a 16-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter to put the Panthers up and Graham made it 14-0 on a 1-yard touchdown plunge before the Panthers showed just how far they've come under Chryst's direction during a flawless 2-minute drill late in the half.

Taking over at the Pitt 45 with 1:19 to go, Sunseri directed the Panthers 55 yards in nine plays, the final one a perfect strike to Ed Tinker from 13 yards out that put the Panthers up 21-0 at the break.

Kevin Harper tacked on a 39-yard field goal early in the third quarter to make it 24-0. Rutgers finally got on board on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Nova to Brandon Coleman late in the third quarter but the 2-point conversion failed and Rutgers never threatened to make it interesting.

The blowout left the Scarlet Knights plenty of time to ponder how things went wrong while getting a headstart on what will be a de facto Big East championship game at home on Thursday night.

"All the marbles are out there for us, and it's a short week," defensive tackle Scott Vallone said. "So, this is for everything. This is why you play football. Sure, we're disappointed, but we still have everything to play for Thursday night. And that has to be our focus."

Hector Camacho Life Support: Boxer's Mother Says Life Support To End Despite Family Dispute

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico ? Hector "Macho" Camacho will be taken off life support, his mother said Friday night, indicating she would have doctors do that Saturday. It was a decision the former championship boxer's eldest son opposed.

The boxer's mother, Maria Matias, told reporters outside the hospital where Camacho lay unconscious since being shot in the face that she had decided doctors should remove life support, but only after three of his sons arrived in Puerto Rico early Saturday and had a chance to see him a last time.

"I lost my son three days ago. He's alive only because of a machine," Matias said. "My son is not alive. My son is only alive for the people who love him," she added.

The three other sons were expected to arrive from the U.S. mainland around midnight Friday. "Until they arrive, we will not disconnect the machine," Matias said.

Another news conference was scheduled for Saturday morning at Centro Medico, the main trauma center for San Juan.

The former champion's mother has the final say in the matter, but his eldest son, Hector Jr., said he wants to keep his father alive.

"He's going to fight until the end. My father is a boxer," the son said.

Doctors have said Camacho is clinically brain dead from a shooting Tuesday night in his hometown of Bayamon. But relatives and friends told The Associated Press they were still wrestling with whether to remove him from life support.

"It is a very difficult decision, a very delicate decision," former pro boxer Victor "Luvi" Callejas, a longtime friend, said in a phone interview. "The last thing we lose is hope and faith. If there is still hope and faith, why not wait a little more?"

Aida Camacho, one of the boxer's aunts, said in an interview that the family could decide by late Friday whether to donate his organs.

As some relatives and friends continued to pray for a miracle, condolences kept coming in for Camacho's family and preparations began for memorials and a funeral Mass.

Gov. Luis Fortuno lamented what he called a sudden loss. "'Macho' will always be remembered for his spontaneity and charisma in and out of the ring," he said.

Also offering condolences was governor-elect Alejandro Garcia Padilla, who defeated Fortuno in November.

"The life of Macho Camacho, like other great athletes of ours, united the country," he said. "We celebrated his triumphs in the streets and we applauded him with noble sportsmanship when he didn't prevail."

Camacho was shot as he sat in a car with a friend, 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, who was killed in the attack. Police spokesman Alex Diaz said officers found nine small bags of cocaine in the friend's pocket and a 10th bag open inside the car.

Police reported no arrests and said investigators continued to interview potential witnesses. Capt. Rafael Rosa told reporters Friday that they are tracking down several leads, but added that very few witnesses were cooperating. He declined to say whether police had identified any suspects.

Hector Camacho Jr. lamented the violence that grips Puerto Rico, a U.S. island territory of nearly 4 million people that reported a record 1,117 homicides last year.

"Death, jail, drugs, killings," he said. "That's what the streets are now."

Camacho's sisters have said they would like to fly Camacho's body to New York and bury him there. Camacho grew up mostly in Harlem, earning the nickname the "Harlem Heckler."

He won super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980s and fought high-profile bouts against Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard. Camacho knocked out Leonard in 1997, ending the former champ's final comeback attempt. Camacho had a career record of 79-6-3.

Camacho battled drug, alcohol and other problems throughout his life. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison on burglary charges, but a judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail, though, after violating that probation. A wife also filed domestic abuse complaints against him twice before their divorce.

Apple asks court to include Galaxy S III with Jelly Bean, Galaxy Note II and four more in lawsuit

As usual, Apple thought Friday night on a holiday weekend was the perfect time to push some more paper through in its ongoing patent lawsuit against Samsung. According to Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents, after Samsung asked to add the latest iPads, iPhones and iPod touches to its list of claims and the court approved the addition of the iPhone 5, Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 10.1, Apple is trying to put six more devices on the list. Listed in the motion are the Galaxy S III running Android Jelly Bean (but not Jelly Bean itself), Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Tab 8.9 WiFi, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Rugby Pro and Galaxy S III mini. As usual, the case will proceed, we'll wait to hear if these requests are approved by the court and in the meantime, iThings and Galaxys alike will continue to fly off the shelves. Given the season, for now it's time to be thankful we're not one of the lawyers spending their day working on this. That leaves us plenty of time for more interesting activities, like hand-to-hand combat against fellow shoppers for the right to purchase slightly discounted items.

Debate over EU debate mixes philosophy and money

Leaders from around Europe are arriving in Brussels Thursday for what promises to be a turbulent summit on the budget for the 27-country European Union. And for once, Britain will be at the heart of the debate. (AP Photo/Virginia Mayo)

(AP) ? Which side of this week's debate on the European Union budget a country takes can depend largely on which side its bread is buttered.

Those that contribute more to the EU than they get back generally want to hold the line on the organization's budget ? or even see spending fall. Those who receive more money than they put in tend to support a robust rise, if at all possible ? and regard possible cuts with dread.

The leaders of the 27 EU member countries descended on Brussels on Thursday to duke it out over the next two, three or even four days regarding the EU's budget trajectory over the seven years from 2014-2020. And, for whatever reason, the philosophies expressed often correlate closely with the money involved.

Each of the EU's 27 national leaders can veto the budget plan. With such diametrically opposed philosophies ? and with real money at stake ? whether they will be able to reach a consensus is anybody's guess.

Here's a look at the two main camps:

?Cutters

Many of those countries that contribute more to the EU budget than they take away are fighting increases in spending, claiming it's wasteful, inefficient, and inappropriate to boost the EU's spending when national budgets are being cut.

Leading the would-be budget-cutters is British Prime Minister David Cameron, whose country is, not coincidentally, one of the largest net contributors to the EU budget, second only to Germany.

"At a time when we're making difficult decisions at home over public spending, it would be quite wrong ? it is quite wrong ? for there to be proposals for this increased, extra spending in the EU," Cameron said Thursday.

A number of other net contributors ? Germany, Finland, Austria, Finland and the Netherlands, for example ? share more or less the same philosophy.

?Boosters

Other countries, most of which get more money from out of the EU than they put in, argue that the union's budget is the best instrument to help the region emerge from the financial crisis. A strong budget, they claim, is the best way to support investment, growth and jobs. Even countries that are net contributors to the EU benefit from its spending in the other countries, they say ? not least because the poorer members will then buy more of the richer member's exports.

Fifteen EU countries have joined together to form the Friends of Cohesion Policy, taking the name from the EU's "cohesion funds," which are intended to help the union hold together by investing in poorer areas so that the gap between the haves and have-nots becomes narrower. The EU countries in the group are: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain.

"Better spending does not rhyme with no spending," said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, whose country is a major net recipient of EU money. In fact, all 15 members of the Friends of Cohesion Policy turn out to be net recipients.
